    Streamers and confetti filled the air at Xavier’s Cintas Center last week in celebration of Lakota’s Class of 2017. Lakota East held its ceremony on Thursday to honor its 692 graduates, with Lakota West hosting its commencement exercises the following evening for 608 graduating seniors.

    The Community Foundation of West Chester/Liberty led the charge in naming the 2017 recipients of the Lakota Educator of Excellence Award this week. The highest staff honor, directed by community nominations, were presented to: Cynthia (Cindy) Sorrell, first grade teacher at Wyandot Elementary School; and Jennifer Akers, music teacher at Hopewell Junior School.

    Woodland Sixth Graders Best in STEM Competition

    Woodland Elementary’s sixth-grade team of Jasmine Baker, Grace Bradley, Veronica Geiger, and Sydney Kerlin topped the state in the 15th annual eCybermission competition. The contest is one of several science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) initiatives sponsored by the U.S. Army Educational Outreach Program.

    Lakota East's Choirs Perform at Disney, Earn State Superior Ratings

    Six Lakota East choirs - with a total of 183 parents, students and chaperones - recently returned from a weeklong trip to Disney World where they participated in the annual Disney choral festival. The Singing Thunderhawks performed in concerts and were judged by professional musicians and college professionals from across the nation. Choirs from throughout the US were represented at the three-day event.

    Each school year, the Lakota Board of Education can choose to approve the renewal of Lakota’s open enrollment policy. Under Board Policy 5113, students residing in other Ohio school districts can apply to attend Lakota. Additionally, the Board of Education set its district cap for the upcoming school year during their April 10, 2017 Board meeting.

    Barb Bossu Awards Celebrate Volunteer Spirit, Dedication to Lakota

    During the annual Barb Bossu Volunteer Spirit awards, volunteers from each Lakota school were recognized for their positive spirit, dedication to the students and true examples of caring and commitment. The awards were established in 1990 in memory of a dedicated Lakota parent, Barb Bossu, to commemorate her enthusiastic spirit and giving nature.

    All across the district, year-end ceremonies are taking place to honor the academic achievements of our students. At the high schools, the “Top 25” students, representing approximately the upper 4% of their graduating class, were recently recognized during some special celebrations.

Members of the "Scientific Touch" team were honored by the Board for their skyscraper window reflection system that qualified them for the First Lego League World Tournament.

The School Board recognized Cherokee third-graders for creating a prosthetic hand using a 3D printer for a child in need.

At the Jan. 23 school board meeting, students read their letters expressing appreciation for the service of Lakota’s five Board of Education members.

Lakota East & West students were recognized by the board for this year's breast cancer research and awareness events that raised an amazing $150,000.

Lakota East junior John Ferguson and senior Sarah Aftab were recognized at a board meeting for their leadership roles in the Model United Nations group.

Woodland Elementary's Meredith Brown and Madison Price were commended by the School Board for leading a community service toy drive to benefit Children’s Hospital.

At the Dec. 12 school board meeting, Lakota East's Erin Aulfinger was congratulated for publishing a book on self-esteem issues and distributing it to Lakota sixth-graders.
